A classical string quartet together with a jazz quartet in a “classical” line-up with trumpet, piano, bass and drums, perform as a large octet: as an ensemble breathing and playing together, not as two quartets from different musical worlds. Uniting opposites and overcoming supposed divisions has always been the artistic credo of Appenzell trumpeter and composer Michael Neff. Spherical string passages contrast with grooving improvisations, intertwine and connect, inspire each other and become a new entity called “Ballads & more”.
